This page explains how to request deletion of any data that Optional Ltd holds in connection with the MOT Plate Android app, and what is automatically deleted without you asking.
1. How to ask us to delete your data
- Send an email to office@optional.org.uk.
- Use the subject line:
MOT Plate: Data deletion request. - Include the install ID shown in the app's About screen (Settings → About). This is the only identifier we need.
- You can also describe the request in your own words: for example, “please delete all data associated with my MOT Plate install”.
We will action your request within 30 days and email you a confirmation. You do not need to include any other personal information.
2. What we will delete
On receiving your request we will:
- Delete the install identifier row from our backend database. This breaks the only link between you and any anonymous request log line that may still be in the 7-day retention window.
- If you have a premium subscription recorded against the install, the subscription record (purchase token, expiry timestamp) is deleted with the install row.
3. What is already auto-deleted
- Request log entries (anonymous metadata used for debugging: timestamp + outcome code) are automatically purged from server logs after 7 days.
- An install row that goes unused for 365 days is automatically deleted, even without a request.
- Your recent lookups list (last 20 plates with vehicle make/model) is stored only on your device. You can clear it any time from Android Settings → Apps → MOT Plate → Storage → Clear data. Uninstalling the app also wipes it. This data is never sent to our servers.
4. What we do not hold in the first place
We never receive or store:
- Photos or screenshots you share with the app (text recognition runs on-device).
- Your name, email, phone number, address, account, or any other personal identifier (we never ask for these).
- Your device’s advertising ID, location, or contact list.
5. Account closure
MOT Plate does not have user accounts to close. The install identifier is the only record of you we hold; deleting it (as in section 2) is the equivalent of closing an account.
6. Contact
